When worlds collide.
When worlds collide we end up giving IV fluids to a dog in the middle of a radish patch.
Let me back up.
We are Peepal Farm. A community of people who primarily want to help others. Initially it seemed like that would be an easy direction to take. We could just pick an issue and then go for it full power, right?
As we began to think about how to help we decided to help animals, and how better to help animals than rescue them? But what would we feed them, especially the carnivores and omnivores? Is it ethical to kill one animal to save another?
Do we feed ourselves industrially grown food? Do we live in a house made from concrete with bricks transported on the backs of beaten donkeys?
Every layer peeled back to reveal more places we could lessen suffering, simply by abstaining or choosing a different course! The devil is in deciding where to draw the line.
So that’s how we ended up here. In the middle of our vegetable patch — the farm which grows nearly all the fresh food that we eat in our community and has the best sunlight in the mornings— using allopathic medicine (nearly the most wasteful industry in the world) to treat a cold dog with a maggot wound. He was an old dog which had been neglected his whole life and then chased away when his rotting flesh was too repulsive for his neighbors.
An unexamined life is not worth living
according to Socrates. That’s what led me to this work. But I wonder…where did he draw the line? When do you stop peeling layers and just DO something, even if it has negative impact to some?
Tell me, where do you draw lines in your life?
