Khichdi/ Mashed Dal and Rice

In this Chana dal khichdi, onions & tomatoes and vegetables are added to make a simple basic one pot dish at home on regular days. Chana Dal is rich in Protein and is very healthy too. So when a light comfort meal is required, this khichdi really fits the bill!


  1. Chana dal- 1 bowl
  2. Rice- 1 bowl
  3. Onion- 1 big
  4. Cauliflower- 50g
  5. Potatoes- 50g
  6. Carrots- 50g
  7. Beans- 50g
  8. Peas- 50g
  9. Garlic- 5-6
  10. Ginger- 1 inch
  11. Tomatoes- 2
  12. Whole cumin- ½ spoon
  13. Whole Black pepper- 10-15
  14. Clove- 1-2
  15. Cinnamon- 1 inch
  16. Indian bay leaf- 2
  17. Red chilly powder-1/4th tsp
  18. Garam Masala- 1/4th tbs
  19. Salt- 1/4th tbs+1/4th tbs
  20. Oil- 4-6 service spoon


  1. Wash the dal and rice and soak it in water. Water should be enough to submerge the grains.
  2. Add salt to dal and rice in water, measuring to 3 bowls. Boil on low heat.
  3. In a separate frying pan, heat some oil. Add cumin to the oil once heated and the whole spices- bay leaf, cinnamon, black pepper, cloves.
  4. Add onions and wait for them to brown.
  5. Once the onions are brown, add ginger and garlic (or ginger garlic paste).
  6. Add tomatoes once all the above mentioned ingredients putrefy.
  7. Add garam masala, salt and red chilly powder to the mix.
  8. Add all veggies.
  9. Stir the veggies on heat till they putrefy.
  10. Once prepared, mix the rice and dal with the putrefied vegetables.
  11. You khichdi is ready to be eaten!
