Arhar Dal (Flat Yellow)

Arhar dal is one of the most common dishes that is made in Indian homes. This dal is quite nutritive and full of protein and served best with Roti or Rice.


  1. Arhar Dal- 250g
  2. Turmeric- 1/4th spoon
  3. Salt- ½ spoon

For Temper/ Tadka

  1. Onion- 2 medium
  2. Green Chillies- 2 chopped
  3. Tomatoes- 2 medium
  4. Red chilly powder- 1/4th spoon
  5. Cumin seeds- 1/4th spoon
  6. Oil- 1 Service spoon
  7. Red chilly powder- 1/4th spoon
  8. Cumin- 1/4th spoon


  1. Wash and soak dal for 2 hours.
  2. Mix turmeric and salt, and boil for about ½ an hour till the dal putrefies.

For Temper/ Tadka

  1. Heat oil in a frying pan.
  2. Add to it cumin and onion.
  3. Once the onion browns, add the tomatoes.
  4. Add red chilly powder.
  5. Once the temper’s prepared, mix it with the dal.
  6. Give one final boil, and the dal is ready to be eaten.

A Tip : a mix of moong dal, masoor dal and arhar dal can also be made taking 100g of each. The temper to be prepared would be the same as for arhar dal.
