“My mother thought I was searching for something that didn’t exist, but it absolutely exists.”

I grew up in a little town called Elma in Washington state, but have lived in Seattle for the past 9 years. I received my cosmetology license just in time for me to realize that I have absolutely no interest in that field of work. I have jumped around from cafes to coffee shops to random odd jobs. I was lucky to find an awesome opportunity at Pike Place Market 5 years ago, which introduced me to a new way of working, full of entertainment and like-minded people.

I first came to India for a little under 6 months and after about 2 weeks of being here I knew I was hooked. I knew that my life would never be the same. It was a certain chaos that I’ve dreamed of since I was a tyke. My mother used to tell me she thought I was searching for something that didn’t exist, but it absolutely exists. I’m here and it’s beautiful! When I was in Chennai, walking through a dark street during the night, I never knew if I was stepping in delicious juicy watermelon or a giant pile of cow dung… and I think that’s why I love it.

I think one of the biggest challenges for me to overcome was going back to USA after traveling and trying to stay sane. I’ve learned to travel in my mind, projecting what I’ve learned and surrounding myself with art and music, which allows me to do so. I think of the places I go; what I see, what I smell, what I hear as a “wallpaper.” If you change your wallpaper, it can completely alter the vibrations. I try to create a wallpaper that puts out great vibrations as much as possible. I always try to remember to keep the light inside shining bright for the animals, plants, friends and family! And let the dragons suck the ego out of you!

I cannot say what I will do when I leave India, as I’m actually thinking of extending my trip. But, I do know, whether it be the people that I surround myself with or the job that I have, it will encourage growth in myself and others.
